Introduction

What is Communication Arts Magaziner?

Communication Arts Magazine is a print publication showcasing extraordinary design, advertising, illustration, photography, and typography.

In working with Communication Arts Magazine, I designed an editorial spread showcasing the life and work of graphic design icon Paula Scher that explores how Scher balances seriousness and play in her work.

Contrast

The spread is designed to embody the contrast between serious and play and how the two themes both compliment and contradict each other.

Black and white were used to reflect opposites that exist in harmony, like yin and yang, and Scher's more "serious" black and white artwork was contrasted against her more colorful and bright pieces that embody "play." Organic colorful shapes were paired with more straightforward black and white circle and square shapes to further emphasize the range of her work.
